Why Your Curls Struggle in the UAE — And Exactly How to Fix It

If your curls felt amazing back home but have been a frizzy, dry mess since moving to — or living in — the UAE, you are not alone. And your curls are not broken. They are simply dealing with one of the most challenging climates on earth for textured hair.

Here is exactly what is happening and what to do about it.

Why the UAE is uniquely challenging for curly hair

Most curl care products are formulated and tested in temperate European or North American climates. In the UAE, those same products behave completely differently. Your curls are up against four environmental factors simultaneously — and most curl routines are not built to handle all four at once.

1. Hard water

UAE tap water is heavily mineralised — high in calcium, magnesium, and chlorine from the desalination process. Over time, these minerals coat the hair shaft and create an invisible barrier that prevents moisture from entering the hair. The result is curls that feel dry and brittle even after conditioning, and products that seem to stop working for no obvious reason.

The fix: use a clarifying shampoo once a month to strip mineral build-up and give your curls a clean slate. Without this reset step, no amount of conditioning will properly hydrate your hair.

2. Extreme heat

Dubai summers regularly exceed 45°C. Desert heat accelerates moisture loss from the hair shaft at a rate that most conditioners simply cannot keep up with. Curls that are not properly moisturised become brittle and prone to breakage.

The fix: deep conditioning treatments become essential in the UAE — not optional. A weekly hair mask replaces what the heat strips away and maintains the elasticity your curls need to survive styling.

3. Humidity

This one surprises people. More moisture in the air sounds like it should help — but for curly hair it creates frizz. Here is why: the hair cuticle naturally tries to absorb moisture from the air. In high humidity, it absorbs too much, too fast, causing the cuticle to swell unevenly. The result is frizz and lost definition.

The fix: sealing the hair with a curl defining gel after conditioning locks the cuticle down and creates a barrier against humidity. The key is applying it to soaking wet hair — not damp.

4. Air conditioning

The indoor-outdoor contrast in the UAE is extreme. You step from 45°C humid air into aggressive air conditioning that drops the temperature by 20 degrees and strips every trace of moisture from the air. Your curls experience this cycle multiple times a day. AC dehydrates the hair shaft and scalp, leaving curls brittle and the scalp irritated.

The fix: a leave-in conditioner applied after washing acts as a moisture reservoir your hair can draw from throughout the day as AC does its damage.

The UAE curly hair routine that actually works

Based on the specific challenges above, here is the routine order that works for curly hair in the UAE climate. Follow this consistently for 6–8 weeks and you will see a real difference.

Step 1 — Monthly clarifying reset

Once a month, start your wash day with a clarifying shampoo. This removes mineral build-up from hard water, old product residue, sweat, and scalp debris. Think of it as a deep clean that allows everything that follows to actually work. Apply to wet hair, massage into the scalp, and rinse thoroughly. Follow immediately with a conditioner — do not skip this step as clarifying opens the cuticle.

Step 2 — Weekly or twice-weekly co-wash

On non-clarifying wash days, use a co-wash — a conditioning cleanser that gently cleans without stripping moisture. This is the heart of the Curly Girl Method and is especially important in the UAE where daily AC and heat mean your scalp and lengths need consistent hydration without the harsh cleanse of a shampoo.

Step 3 — Condition every wash

After cleansing, apply conditioner from mid-lengths to ends. In the UAE, use the heavier conditioner option if your hair is thick, coily, or high porosity — your hair needs the extra oil and moisture to compensate for what the climate takes away. For finer wavy hair, a lighter conditioner works better to avoid weighing the curl down.

Step 4 — Weekly deep treatment

Once a week, replace your regular conditioner with a hair mask. Leave it on for 5–10 minutes before rinsing. This is your most powerful weapon against UAE climate damage — it penetrates deeper than regular conditioner and restores elasticity, softness, and curl definition from within. This step becomes even more important in summer months.

Step 5 — Leave-in conditioner on wet hair

After rinsing, do not towel dry aggressively. Use a microfibre towel or cotton t-shirt to gently squeeze out excess water. Then while hair is still dripping wet, apply your leave-in conditioner evenly from roots to ends. This is your moisture seal — it stays in the hair all day and counteracts AC dryness.

Step 6 — Seal with curl defining gel

Immediately after the leave-in, apply curl defining gel to soaking wet hair. Work it through in sections, scrunching upwards to encourage curl formation. This seals the cuticle, locks in definition, and creates a barrier against humidity-induced frizz. Allow hair to air dry completely — do not touch it while drying or you will break the curl cast and create frizz.

The common mistakes that make UAE curls worse

  • Skipping the clarifying step. Without a monthly reset, mineral build-up accumulates and your products stop penetrating. If your curls feel dull and unresponsive, this is usually why.
  • Using the same routine all year. The UAE does have seasons — the cool months from October to April are gentler on curls than the brutal summer humidity. Your routine should adapt accordingly, going heavier on moisture in summer and lighter in winter.
  • Over-conditioning to fight frizz. More conditioner does not always mean less frizz. In humid climates, too much conditioning can cause curls to go limp and lose structure — a condition called hygral fatigue. Balance is key.
  • Applying products to dry or slightly damp hair. In the UAE climate, leave-in conditioner and gel must go on soaking wet hair. Applying to dry hair locks in no moisture and gives no curl definition.
  • Treating climate damage as permanent damage. Most curls that struggle in the UAE are not damaged — they are adapting. Give your routine 6–8 weeks of consistency before concluding that something is wrong.
